Everything runs in your browser: names and amounts are never sent or stored.
Four friends spend a weekend in a rented cabin. Anna paid the rental, Tom did the grocery run, Jake bought firewood and Lucy hasn't paid anything yet:
| Person | Paid | Share | Balance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anna | $600 | $225 | is owed $375 |
| Tom | $240 | $225 | is owed $15 |
| Jake | $60 | $225 | owes $165 |
| Lucy | $0 | $225 | owes $225 |
The total is $900, so each share is $225. Three transfers settle everything: Lucy pays Anna $225, Jake pays Anna $150 and Jake pays Tom $15.
If everyone paid back each person's share of each expense, four people could end up making up to twelve transfers, many of them going back and forth. The calculator only looks at each person's final balance and pairs whoever owes the most with whoever is owed the most, over and over. That way you never need more transfers than the number of people minus one. The guide on settling group debts with fewer transfers goes into detail.
The calculator works when everything is split among everyone and you already know what each person paid. For a trip of several days it often falls short:
That's what TribuSplit is for: everyone logs what they pay as it happens, from their phone, and the app does this same math on its own. It's free and nobody needs an account to join.
No. The math runs in your browser and nothing is sent to any server. Close the page and it's gone.
Yes, as long as every amount is in the same currency. If some expenses were in another currency, convert them to one first; this guide explains how to do it fairly.
The calculator splits everything equally. If an expense was only for some of you, the simplest way is to log it in the app, where you choose who takes part in each expense.
They go one by one to the first people on the list, so the total adds up exactly and nothing is lost or left over.
